CHAPTER 14

The rocking of the carriage lulled Aurora after two sleepless nights, but she still couldn’t bring herself to rest. Every movement outside the carriage drew her attention, and even after she realized it was a bird or even just a leaf, it took a while to calm herself again.

Her brother linked his fingers with hers. “It will be all right. I do not think the culprit knows we have left yet, and I believe he will search for us back home rather than at Riverwood.”

“At least at first.”

“Duke Erembour took in many that had been in service to him in France. I suspect Riverwood will be well guarded.”

“Did we take in men that had been in service to you?”

“Some, yes, though the men who served under me were different.”

“Different how?”

“I could never do all that Duke Erembour did. He and I are too dissimilar, but England needed both of us,” Francis said.

“You’re not answering my question.”

Francis squeezed her hand. “He served England in a way only he could.”

“He was a spy.”

Francis winced. “Not a spy. More like a secret operative.”

“What’s the difference?”

“I suspect spies report information. Duke Erembour gathered it from many sources and acted on it.”

“And those are the men he hired when they came home?” Aurora shuddered. They may all have been doing what England asked of them, what England needed, but it still terrified her.

Not that Duke Erembour needed to be any more terrifying.

“Duke Erembour is a good man.”

Aurora raised a brow. “Are we talking about the same Lord Kane Vestra that used to gift me snakes and frogs? The same one that can terrify a man with just a look?”

“I suspect he had a reason for giving you frogs. And I did not say he was a kind man or a polite one. But he is a good man, nonetheless.”

Her brother wasn’t wrong, and Aurora wasn’t certain how that made her feel. Not that it really mattered how she felt.

Lord Kane Vestra, Duke of Erembour, would never harbor such a soft emotion as love, and only love would convince Aurora to change her course and marry.

She wanted what her parents had enjoyed, and anything else would be a poor substitution.

The sound of horses’ hooves yanked her head up, and Francis squeezed her fingers. “Speak of the Devil.”

She buried a smile as she remembered Violet’s name for the Duke of Erembour.

Their carriage stopped, and Francis stepped out to speak with the duke. A moment later, Francis stepped back inside as the coachmen unloaded two trunks from the rear of the carriage.

“Lord Kane believes it best if we ride with him. Our carriage will catch up eventually, but if the villain is following us, he will continue to pursue our carriage.”

Aurora sucked in a breath as she glanced over at the simple black carriage beside them. It was perfectly serviceable and nondescript. It displayed no family crest or anything else proclaiming its owner.

She just prayed it was more comfortable to ride in than it appeared.

Not that she had any right to be picky.
